Nepal resumed tea exports to India on June 30, 2026, following a two-month halt caused by stricter testing regulations. After diplomatic negotiations, India agreed to relax these norms, requiring testing for only 20% of shipments.
Currently, Nepal sends 86% of its tea production to India. To mitigate risks, authorities are focusing on quality improvements and market diversification. Potential new markets include China, Pakistan, the United States, and Europe.
The sector produces 26.5 million kg of tea annually and employs over 60,000 workers. A government task force has formally recommended exploring alternative markets to reduce reliance on India.
